Your initial online reaction to each Discussion Question is due by Friday of each week.

Tips for Weekly Discussion Questions

  • Try to support your positions taken on the weekly discussion questions with quotes or paraphrasing from relevant journal articles or sections of the textbook.

  • Be sure to consult the ACA, AMHCA, ASCA and AAMFT Codes of Ethics prior to responding to be sure you understand their perspective concerning the question being asked and quote relevant principles from the various codes when you respond to the questions initially and when you are reacting to the responses of your fellow classmates

  • Be respectful in responding to your fellow classmates responses to the discussion questions

Tips on Weekly Personal Reactions to Readings

These reactions will be due by Noon on TBA for six weeks beginning week 1. The reaction will be no less than 250 words per grid with a separate grid for each of the videos. The grid to be used is as follows:

Tips for Reactions to Ethics in Action Videos

  • Review relevant journal articles or sections of the textbook relevant to the topic on each video and quote or reference them in your reaction grid to the specific video as well as your reaction to your fellow classmates' grids

  • Review the Codes of Ethics of ACA, AMHCA, ASCA, and AAMFT and see what they have to say about the situation raised by the specific video and reference specific principles from the code in your grid as well as your reaction to your fellow classmates' grids

  • It is important in analyzing ethical situations that counselors recognize that there are six basic moral principles which form the highest level of ethical functioning by counselors. These are pointed out on pp 17-19 in Corey, et al. They are:

    1. autonomy

    2. Nonmaleficence

    3. beneficence

    4. justice

    5. fidelity

    6. veracity.

Tips for Improving Ethical Case Analysis Grids

  1. Research in the ACA, AMHCA, AAMFT, and ASCA ethical codes and Florida Statutes for principles which are related to this case and be ready to identify them in the paper using the Template examples of referencing them. Never put a complete section of a Code into your grid just put the letter or number of the principle and paraphrase it in a short phrase and put in a citation from the Code. Do not use the ethical codes of APA or NASW since their codes have no bearing on the practice of masters level professional counselors.

  2. Research in the Textbook for issues which the authors say counselors must take into consideration when facing cases like the one you are analyzing. If you cite the text in your grid be sure you have page number where the authors said what you are citing.

  3. Use a journal article-which you can get from the Argosy online library- in each of your case analyses and be sure the journal article is referenced in your grid.

  4. This is an Ethics analysis and not a best practices of counseling analysis so be sure you have your ethical reasoning hats on and not just looking at the case with your counseling training eyes.

  5. You must look at these cases from multiple options since there is intentionally not a lot of information offered so that you cannot approach the case with a Black and White perspective. Ethical thinking allows you to look at a multiple set of options to be pursued with an understanding of the consequence of following each of the options.

  6. It is important in analyzing ethical situations that counselors recognize that there are six basic moral principles which form the highest level of ethical functioning by counselors. These are pointed out on pp 17-19 in Corey, et al. They are:

    1. autonomy

    2. Nonmaleficence

    3. beneficence

    4. justice

    5. fidelity

    6. veracity.

It is strongly recommended and essentially required that you utilize these six concepts in analyzing your seven cases in the weekly case studies. Using these principles will help you to clearly identify the Ethical Issue, Nature of the Ethical Issue and the Dimension of the Ethical Issue.

    • Ethical Issue: The Ethical Issue is which of the six basic moral principles is most involved in the content and material of the case.

    • Nature of the Ethical Issue of the case is determined by the six principles. Taking each principle and look at the case with these principles in mind to decide what really is going on in the case from an ethical perspective

    • Dimensions of an Ethical issue in a case means that you will need to use your senses when exploring a case and see how it looks, how it sounds, how it feels, how it smells and how it tastes. You will need to look at the size of it, breadth of it, implications of it, potential outcomes of it, impact on others of it, why it is important to address, what the possible negative outcomes which could come from handling it wrong, etc. You utilize the six principles in this analysis so that you then can clearly define the over-riding ethical issue  in this case.

  7. You must keep your grid responses crisp, to the point and not overloaded with verbiage and keep it to close to the the 1000 word minimum. You have only the grid o utilize to analyze the case in the key areas so be exact, specific, precise, and clear.

  8. You are to post the grid within the message of a posting on the appropriate thread on the Discussion Board by Noon of the day the analysis is due.

Housekeeping Chores to improve your ONLINE responses to all Assignment and your Ethical Case Analyzes.

  1. Use of Journal Article: this must be an actual journal article which relates to the ethical issue identified in the case. You are not allowed to use a website as an article. The article must come from a legitimate professional counseling related journal. You can get these articles from the Argosy Online Library. You must cite the article as you discuss the case in your case analysis. You must put in an APA style reference for the article in the appropriate box.

  2. Use of citations from Textbook: It is important to have an APA style reference in the appropriate box for the sections of the textbook you used to complete your case analysis.

  3. Codes of Ethics: You must identify principles by number and name from ACA, AMHCA, ASCA, and AAMFT codes of ethics. You do not need to describe them. You must have more than one principle from each code of ethics - ideally no less than 3 and more than 6 principles from  code of ethics.

  4. Options: It is important that you have three distinct options listed. It is important that each option is completely different from the others and not just a variation of another option. Finally you must select only ONE of the options and describe why you chose this one option. You defend your choice by citations from textbook and citatation from journal article you used.

  5. Spelling and Grammar Errors: It is important to try to eliminate your spelling and grammar errors. For this reason you ought to do your grid in a Word Document first. Then do a spelling and grammar check. You will lose credit if your spelling and grammar errors are too glaring. Another reason for doing your grid in a work document is that you can save it so that just in case there is a catastrophe like the case analysis thread disappearing you will have the back up copy to resubmit.
Ethical Analysis vs Counseling Analysis: This is analysis of an ethical issue not the analysis of a counseling session. Please try not to get into too much detail how one would counsel the client, but rather how one would handle the client in an appropriate ethical manner. In some cases they are very distinct and different
