Professional Group Organizations

  • The Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW), a division of the American Association for Counseling and Development. All ASGW members receive the Journal for Specialists in Group Work, a quarterly journal that publishes research, practical, and innovative articles in the field of group work. Members also receive: (a) the ASGW Together which provides both regional and national in­formation and special articles of interest to group practitioners; (b) the Journal of Counseling and Development; and (c) Counseling Today, a monthly newspaper. Students enrolled in counseling or human services programs and who have an interest in group work are able to join ASGW and ACA at reduced rates by contacting the ACA Membership Division, 5999 Stevenson Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22304, or telephone (800) 347-6647.  ASGW Website is http://www.asgw.org/   

  • The American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) This organization publishes a quarterly journal, International Journal of Group Psychotherapy, and a newsletter as well.  The AGPA website provides information about group psychotherapy, and also provides ethical guidelines for group therapists.   • The American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama (ASGPP) is an interdisciplinary society with members from all of the helping fields. The goals of the organization are to establish standards for specialists in group therapy and psychodrama and to support the exploration of new areas of endeavors in research, practice, teaching, and training. The ASGPP holds national and regional conferences, provides a national journal, the Journal of Group Psychotherapy, Psychodrama and Sociometry. Website: http://www.asgpp.org/

  • Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy – Division 49 of APA Division 49 of the American Psychological Association provides a forum for psychologists interested in research, teaching, and practice in group psychology and group psychotherapy. The Division’s quarterly journal, Group Dynamics: Theory, Research and Practice, and its newsletter, The Group Psychologist, are sent to all members and affiliates.Website: http://www.apa49.org/
