Our trip to Cincinnati was from June 21-26, 2001. We toured the Tri-State area in this time. Here are some pictures and facts, which we think will give you some insight into this wonderful community.

The Fountain Downtown

wpe96.jpg (37495 bytes)Tyler Davidson Fountain in Fountain Square in the City of Cincinnati became famous with the TV sitcomwpe98.jpg (48873 bytes) WQRP. This is an attractive focal point for the city which has garnered quite a bit of community interest in the past few years as seen in the Cincinnati.com's archive of articles.

Eats and Treats

wpe7.jpg (34895 bytes)We went to the Skyline ChiliwpeA.jpg (34728 bytes) on Ludlow Street to have our Chili 4 way. Chili is the city's most famous dish and is usually flavored with cinnamon, allspice and sometimes chocolate, and the ground beef sauce is served over spaghetti. Cincinnati chili is traditionally offered in several styles, ranging from ''one-way'' (sauce only) to ''five-way'' (sauce and kidney beans over spaghetti, topped with chopped onion and shredded cheddar). You can order your own skyline's from their website at www.skylinechili.com .

wpeC.jpg (58707 bytes)wpeE.jpg (44504 bytes)We walked across the street from Skyline and found these beautiful flowers in front of a quaint flower shop. We were on our way to another city tradition, the ice cream at Graeter's Ice Cream. You can order ice cream to be sent to your home by use of their website: www.graeters.com . The servings were awesome.

wpe14.jpg (23327 bytes)wpe10.jpg (75387 bytes)In the window you can see a Graeter's truck reflected. There are shops all over the area. The shop has an old time feel to it. An unusual feature in all of these Graeter's is the presence of a full scale bakery and candy store as well. These people really love their sweets! It was amazing to see that there were no yogurt or low-fat items on their menus. The city's status, at one-time, as a hog market was so large and so profitable thwpe12.jpg (29040 bytes)at people referred to the city as Porkopolis. It has a statue of flying pigs and there are even wonderful decorated pigs found all over the city which were part of a fund raising event a couple years back. It seemed to us that if you stayed long enough in this town you would become a "porker" too!

wpeD1.jpg (27987 bytes)wpeDC.jpg (45331 bytes)The most interesting and fattening experience was in Xenia, Ohio north of Cincinnati where the Young's Jersey Dairy is located. They have an active dairy on the grounds which is the source for their fantastic ice cream and other confections. They also have a bakery in their ice cream parlor, along with a fast food restaurant.

The Golden Jersey Inn is a full scale restaurant on the farm. It features products raised and grown in Ohio. wpeD4.jpg (32957 bytes)wpeD6.jpg (21773 bytes)Also on the grounds of this entertainment destination you can find Udders and Putters which includes two full miniature golf courses, a driving range, batting cages, picnic grove, and a wonderful petty zoo and children's play ground.

wpeE3.jpg (29436 bytes)wpeD8.jpg (46678 bytes)On left is the  Golf Driving Range in the barn like structure and on right is the Old mill hole in one of the two miniature golf courses.

wpeE5.jpg (50085 bytes)On right is the children's playground. You can read more about Young's Jersey Dairy at their website: www.youngsdairy.com and see more pictures of their animals in our Animal section of our travelogue.

Cincinnati Museum Center

wpe16.jpg (22471 bytes)The city of Cincinnati converted its Union Station, which once handled over 200 trains a day, to the home of five Attractions: The Cincinnati History Museum, Cinergy Children's Museum, Museum of Natural History and Science, Lindner Family Omnimax Theater and the Cincinnati Historical Society Library.

wpe18.jpg (36540 bytes)The building is the largest permanent half dome in the nation. It has the largest collection of non-religious murals in the world. These murals are immensewpe1A.jpg (39676 bytes) and give the viewer a wonderful sense of the history of the development of the city and the regional area.

wpe1C.jpg (43347 bytes)wpe1E.jpg (38102 bytes)One gets swept up in their beauty and detail. The mix of races, ethnic groups, religions, sexes, cultures and peoples who went into making this region what it is today are portrayed in these murals.

wpe20.jpg (33964 bytes)wpe22.jpg (39001 bytes)

Cincinnati was the beginning of the Western Frontier at one time. It also was very dependent on the commerce on the Ohio river.

wpe24.jpg (31229 bytes)Inside the Museum of History is a full scale rewpe26.jpg (20049 bytes)plica of the city in three distinct time periods. It is overwhelming and yet informative. On the right you can see the entrance to full scale replica of a river boat which you can board and gain information about the river boats on the Ohio River.

wpe28.jpg (54274 bytes)The front fountains looks towards the downtown section of the city and it reminds us that this city is very much alive, beautiful, and vibrant. You can visit this museum online at its website: www.cincymuseum.org .

Shrine of St. Anthony

wpe9A.jpg (22644 bytes)Built in 1888 by the Franciscan OFM's of the St. John the Baptist Province, this chapel was dedicated to St. Anthony and over the years became a place of pilgrimage. It is located across from Mt Airy Forest on Colerain Avenue. On left is the main altar, of the newly refurbished chapel, and on the right, is the area dedicated to the memory of Anwpe9D.jpg (44603 bytes)thony of Padua, who was a Franciscan Friar of great godliness. Those who honor his memory seek health and healing from God for such issues as: growth in confidence, healing of a spouse, healing, protection against danger, healing from cancer, emotional healing, for appropriate use of medications, and for the health of an expectant mother and her unborn child. For more information on the shrine and the Franciscan you can go to their website: www.franciscan.org .
