The Butterfly Show

wpeED.jpg (60177 bytes)wpeEF.jpg (30702 bytes)The Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park was holding the Butterfly Show 2001. Countless North American butterflies are released to fly freely within the Conservatory's showroom, which adds a blaze of color to this already charming place. The Butterflies on right are Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charitonius).

wpeF1.jpg (26941 bytes)wpeF3.jpg (33797 bytes)The Butterflies flew freely in the room landing on both plants and people at will. The Butterfly on right is a Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charitonius). The butterfly at left is a Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)

wpeF5.jpg (31879 bytes)wpeF7.jpg (42204 bytes)The event was surrealistic in that the plants were already breathtaking and then these charming creatures would come along to enliven the atmosphere. The Butterflies on right and left are Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charitonius).

wpeF9.jpg (55473 bytes)wpeFF.jpg (32524 bytes)Families came prepared for this event by bringing oranges which they cut into wedges so that the sweet juice would attract the butterfly to come and perch on the wedge held by the lucky admiring person. The butterfly at right is a Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)

wpeFD.jpg (26198 bytes)wpe10B.jpg (45658 bytes)If their hands were sticky enough with the orange juice the butterfly would perch to the outstretched hand. The butterfly both right and left is a Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae)

wpe10D.jpg (40316 bytes)There were butterflies from Costa Rica, Africa, and Malaysia in cages. The North American Butterflies were allowed to fly freely in the room. At left is a Papillo demodcus from Africa.

At right is one example of the Krohn Conservatory Bonsai Collection. This incredible collection of bonsai trees changes over the year based on donors who lend their trees to this exhibit area. The Greater Cincinnati Bonsai Society offers much support to this effort.

On right and left are three lovely samples of orchids which can be viewed in the Orchid Display of the Krohn Conservatory. Thewpe107.jpg (28425 bytes)y have 17 differwpe105.jpg (30549 bytes)ent varieties of orchids on display. Their color and beauty speak for themselves.

wpe10F.jpg (87542 bytes)At right is a Century Plant which is contained in the Desert Garden which features a vast variety of cactus plants. This particular plant only blossoms but once in fifty years or so.

wpe109.jpg (34598 bytes)At left is a picture of the Palm House an indoor rain forest, complete with a twenty-foot waterfall and towering trees.
