Coping
with the 9.11.01 Aftermath

Selection of 9/11 Poetry
By: Mary Gonzalez
Fire in the Sky
Ablaze! the heavens went Ablaze!
In an instant all hell broke loose...
The Hudson River was turned suddenly into a haze
Of smoke, fire, sulfur!
The Birds hit their prey
With no regards for the carnage, the casualties, the
loss!
Less than an hour
Twin brothers fell
Victims of the blood-bath!
In perplexity I scratch my head and wonder
What could have prepared us for this horrendous act?
In an instant New York City as we knew it was blown
away..
For no apparent reason whatsoever!
The enemy struck down thousands of innocent victims!
Now, it must answer to our wrath! |
Phoenix Rising
I saw the Eagle wounded,
His mighty wings covered with soot, ashes and blood...
I saw the Eagle falling, falling,
And my heart was forever broken,
Watching as the Eagle lay helpless in the flood.
His enemy watched from a distance
And laughed in a haughty tone.
He was certain that with this act of violence
He could kill the Eagle with a single stone!
I saw the eagle dying
And my heart suddenly stood still.
I just couldn't stop crying...
This whole thing made me rather ill!
From the heavens a mighty wind covered the earth
As the Eagle lay on the ground...
And in awe I witnessed a miracle...a rebirth!
The Eagle rose triumphant,
Flapping his wings around..
He rose triumphant and once again..
Nothing, nothing can kill the Eagle!
He has a mighty Iron Will!
In horror the enemy looked up towards the horizon,
Thinking he hit his prey
To his surprise he was mistaken..
The Eagle has risen!
After this horrific day,
His spirit lives on forever...
Day after blessed day! |
New York At Christmas
There is a somber yet festive tone in the air,
Down at Ground zero;
Voices of despair
And the memories of loved ones and the heroes
Are silenced and soothed as the snowflakes fall;
In the distance voices like angels
rise in silent hymns and prayers,
To remember the fallen with love and Carols
People united together,
With one voice...one heart, united..
Offering love and peace
To the dearly departed.
There is a different drum beat in the City.
The Big Apple dresses in red and green..
Picking up the pieces of 911 with as much dignity...
Everywhere you turn love, unity and charity can be seen..
As never before..
Christmas in New York City
Reigns down once more..
Shining the light of love and brotherhood
Through Manhattan, Brooklyn and every single neighborhood..
The enemy, like some wretched grinch thought that it could
Steal Christmas from us this year..
But they have failed...
Everywhere you turn there is still laughter, love and cheer...
Christmas is here again...Love prevailed
To restore the peace and unity we once knew..
Christmas reigns in the City that never sleeps
and it spreads a healing balsam that will renew
The Spirit of generosity, love and fortitude! |
Out of the Rubbles of 911
Amidst the calm, Indian summer morning,
Calamity struck in less than one hour,
The whole world was in mourning..
Twin brothers fell...the horror!
The chaos and confusion..
The blood loss...the Terror!
From within a distance the enemy rejoiced, laughing with pleasure..
Ahhhh! Victory! Defeat of America! Success!!!!
The sudden thrill of death...
Blood smeared on his hands...
The coward hid safe beneath the earth
As millions of innocent people died in this Tragedy..
A nation stood still
Everywhere brother consoling brother..
A sea of American flags furled everywhere
To show the enemy
That a Suicide bomber or two cannot maim or kill
The spirit of brotherhood... democracy.
America, like a great phoenix rises out of the ashes
And lives forever! |
America Remembers
Through the rubbles the voices cry,
Young, old...heroes one and all
Voices clamoring for a justice we simply can't deny;
Voices of our brothers and sisters today do we recall;
As night turns into day
The City strives
To alter the disarray
But still the Big Apple remembers 911 and all those who lost their lives!
America remembers the Tragedy quite clear,
September 11, two thousand one
Brings an air of sadness to our minds; but never fear
For America can never be shaken...it will persevere and we'll live on!
Yet we must remember one and all
The tragic quake caused by evil men
That shook the Big Apple
And took the lives of America's children
America remembers
With a tear in her eyes and a sadness in her soul,
As the voices of her children
Clamor for justice once and for all. |
In her own words: I've been
writing poetry since grade school. I write mainly love poems but have written
about a variety of subjects as well. My poem, "My Love Lies Bleeding" has been
published in an anthology by the International Library of Poetry and I've had
another poem included in an Anthology.
