Coping with the 9.11.01 Aftermath

Our Darkest Hour

By: Judy Ivey

OUR DARKEST  HOUR

A sound is carried on the wind

Across the blackened sky,

A baby longs for a mother's touch

To sooth his feverish cry.

A child awakens from a dream

And scurries down the hall,

To find refuge in Daddy's bed

From shadows on the wall.

A mother cooks the evening meal

The table set for three,

A folded flag adorns the spot

where "brother's" place should be.

A husband waits for dawn to break

his eyes red-rimmed and bleak,

The loss is more than he can bear

For him there is no sleep.

A comrade steps up to the plate

And gets a "job well done,"

An honor he can never share

With a friend who now is gone.

On that warm September day

So many lives were lost,

We don't know all the answers

But we certainly know the cost.

We've seen our darkest hour

And we know what we must do,

Our freedom is too precious

We must stand up for truth.

United we will win this fight

And bring terror to its knees,

If we put our faith in Him

Who died for you and me.

Pray for our nation's leaders

That they will see this through,

And make our children still feel safe

It's the least that we can do.

In her own words:

This poem was written October 12th 2001 by my sister in law Judy Ivey, who works for the department of defense in Alabama. (AOD). We all felt the pain of 9-11. My son had just joined the Air Force right before the terror attack and has been on many missions since then (Enduring Freedom). I have had this poem which she wrote and submitted it. It was put in the Depot Paper (Tracks) for all to read. I just wanted to share it with others and let them know here in Alabama we also felt the pain and it will forever be in our hearts and minds.
