Coping
with the 9.11.01 Aftermath

A Tourist's View of a Healing New York City
October 26, 2001

Long before 9.11.01, we had
planned a trip beginning with New York City and then on to 'cruising the
Caribbean.' After the tragedy, I had second thoughts about flying anywhere, let
alone NYC. I'm so glad we did not cancel. It was a 'humbling' experience
to witness a small facet of the horrible tragedy of the WTC destruction. I came
away with added understanding, appreciation, and empathy for the residents of
NYC. This terrible tragedy was more immense for the residents of the New York
City to have endured than I ever imagined. Having seen the unfolding on
television I thought I understood the size and impact of the calamity. The
terrible smell and the wafting of soot in the air and on your clothes and on the
cars added a dimension I will never forget! The floral memorials, such as the
ones pictured in front of the fire stations, are in front of many stations
throughout the city. There were thousands of funerals and memorials still taking
place - almost incomprehensible given that it was almost eight weeks later and
the city was still reeling from the blows of such an enormous and devastating
tragedy!
Here's a collage of the photos
taken 10.26.01. We took the Manhattan skyline picture from the Empire State
building and could see the smoke rising from ground zero.
